The name Fela Anikulapo Kuti does not need an introduction, he is one of the greatest musical legends that ever lived the surface of this world. He was the inventor of the popular afro music, a popular genre of music which got him famous in the early sixties.
He was a multi-talented Musician, a songwriter, saxophonist, keyboardist and multi-instrumentalists.
Fela Anikulapo Kuti was born on 15th October 1938 and died on 2nd August 1997 at the age of 58 after complications from AIDS.
He was noted for having several wive and he shocked the world when he married 27 women in one day
He was noted for his strong opposition to military dictatorship, military rule and corruption. He was said to have died of HIV but many people are of the opinion that he was probably murdered.
Apart from music he was also a political activist and uses music to preach his message. He was nicknamed baba 70,
On the 12th of August in the year 1997, Fela's body was laid to rest at a glorious ceremony which attracted millions of people from all over the world who graced the occasion. The ceremony took place at the open Arena of the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos. The ceremony witnessed appearance and performances from friends, families, well-wishers and colleagues in the industry. At the end of the event, his remains were transported down to his house at Allen Avenue area in Ikeja where he was finally laid to rest.
Decade After his death, his music lives on and thanks to baba 70 for giving us this beautiful genre of music. His burial place is located in his former house where he lived with his family and composed most of his songs.
